The Skills for Care has developed a Workforce Strategy in collaboration with the adult social care sector “to ensure we have enough of the right people with their skills to provide the best possible care and support for the people who draw on it”.
Launched on 18 July 2024, the Workforce Strategy represents a coordinated effort to enhance the recruitment, retention and development of the adult social care workforce. Among other improvement proposals the Workforce Strategy aims to ensure that workers are adequately trained to support the growing need of the social care services.
“In 2023-24, there were 131,000 vacancies on any given day – a vacancy rate of 8.3% which was around three times the average for the economy. Over a quarter of people leave their jobs in care each year and around a third of them leave the sector altogether. 29% of our workforce – around 440,000 people are over 55 and could retire in the next decade. Simply put, we don’t have enough people in adult social care today and we are going to need more tomorrow.”
On the “Implementation” page of the Workforce Strategy for Adult Social Care in England, it reads:
“By working together, we can build a future where social care offers fulfilling careers, attracts talented individuals, and empowers its workforce to deliver exceptional care”
